Early one morning, Milo the harvest mouse climbed his favorite fence post to sniff the new day. The meadow smelled of dew and clover. Bees hummed. Grass whispered. Then the whole sky went quiet β the kind of quiet that means something wonderful is about to happen.
WHOOSH! The clouds rippled like water, and a golden dragon sailed overhead β huge and gentle, shining like a hundred sunrises. Milo's whiskers trembled with wonder. "A golden dragon!" he breathed. "Grandma says you only see one once in your whole life!"
As the dragon turned toward the mountains, one tiny scale came loose. It spun down, down, down β twinkling like a falling star β and drifted far across the valley toward Silverpond and the Old Oak. Milo's heart went pitter-pat. "I'm going to find it," he whispered proudly.
At the edge of the meadow, the path split in two. The river path burbled and splashed toward Silverpond. The hill path climbed breezy Whistle Hill toward the Old Oak. Milo scratched his ear. Which way should he go to find the golden scale?
