In a little village at the foot of Cloud-Top Mountain lived Mei, a girl with strong boots and a curious heart. Everyone said a dragon lived in the temple at the very top. Today, Mei was going to find out. She packed a honey cake she'd baked herself.
Tap, tap, tap went Mei's boots on the first stone steps. The morning smelled of pine trees and cold, clean snow. Somewhere above, tiny bronze wind chimes went tingle-ting. 'Hello, mountain,' whispered Mei. 'I'm coming up to meet your dragon.' Her tummy felt fizzy with excitement.
Up and up she climbed, until the path split in two. One way: steep stone stairs rising straight into the clouds. The other: a winding path that wandered past a singing spring. Mei stopped and scratched her nose. Hmm. Which way would you choose?
The mountain waited quietly. Should Mei climb the steep stairs straight up into the clouds, or take the long, winding path past the singing spring?
