We're in the prehistoric world again — but WHOA. No trees! No ferns! Just hot sand and red rocks everywhere. It's a DESERT! ZIP! Something small and fast just zoomed past!
It's a VELOCIRAPTOR! That means speedy thief! But wait — she's TINY! Only the size of a TURKEY! And she's covered in fluffy FEATHERS! She looks more like a bird than a dinosaur!
Look at her feet! Only TWO toes touch the sand. The third toe holds a big curved claw, way up high and out of the way. What's it for? Nobody's quite sure — but it's perfect for grabbing and hanging on tight!
She's zooming off! Where is she going?
Did Velociraptor Have Feathers?
Yes. In 2007, scientists found small bumps called quill knobs on a Velociraptor arm bone, the same spots where feathers anchor to a bird's wing. So Velociraptor was covered in feathers, with feathered arms like small wings, even though it couldn't fly. It was much smaller than the movie version, too: about the size of a turkey.
What Happens in the Story
In Velociraptor's Speedy Race, your child follows a Velociraptor across the deserts of what is now Mongolia, about 75 million years ago, and chooses where she goes next. Four paths lead to four different endings:
Find a nest of speckled eggs hidden in the sand
Race across the dunes with a second Velociraptor, and wonder whether they were friends
Sniff out hidden water in the moonlit desert
Watch a feathery dance on a flat rock

Frequently Asked Questions
How big was Velociraptor?
About the size of a turkey. It was around 6 feet (2 meters) long including its tail, but only about 1.5 feet (half a meter) tall at the hips, and it weighed around 30 to 45 pounds (15 to 20 kilograms).
Were the raptors in the movies real?
Not quite. The movie raptors borrowed Velociraptor's name, but they were far bigger, closer to the size of its relative Deinonychus, and they had no feathers. The real Velociraptor was small, fast and fluffy.
