Pop on your diving goggles, dinosaur explorer — today we're diving UNDER the waves, into a warm prehistoric sea. It's blue, it's bright, and it's full of life. And look — something HUGE is moving down below us...
It's a MOSASAURUS — and she's GIGANTIC! She's as long as three great white sharks. But here's the surprise: she's not a dinosaur. She's a giant sea lizard, a cousin of today's Komodo dragon. While dinosaurs ruled the land, SHE ruled the sea.
She lived right at the very end of the dinosaurs' time. Watch — up she rises to the top and gulps a big breath of fresh air! Just like a whale, she can't breathe underwater, so she can't stay down forever. Come on — let's dive after her!
She gives her tail a flick. Where will she swim?
How Big Was Mosasaurus?
The biggest Mosasaurus grew to around 40 to 50 feet (12 to 15 meters) long, longer than three great white sharks lined up nose to tail. Its head alone was about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long and packed with cone-shaped teeth, and it powered through the water with a fish-like tail fin and four paddle-shaped flippers.
What Happens in the Story
In Mosasaurus' Wide Blue Sea, your child follows a Mosasaurus through the warm seas of the Late Cretaceous, about 70 million years ago, and chooses where she swims next. Four paths lead to four different endings:
Chase a speedy little fish that just might get away
Power up through the water and burst into the air
Dive into the deep, dark ocean, where her dark back helps her hide
Rise to the surface and look out at the world of the dinosaurs
More Mosasaurus Facts
It breathed air, so like a whale it had to swim to the surface for every breath.
Mosasaurs gave birth to live babies at sea instead of laying eggs.
Mosasaurus lived at the very end of the age of dinosaurs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was Mosasaurus a dinosaur?
No. It lived at the same time as the dinosaurs, but it was a giant sea-going lizard. Its living relatives are lizards and snakes, and it may have been most closely related to monitor lizards, like the Komodo dragon.
Was Mosasaurus as big as in the movies?
No. The movie version is far bigger than the real animal. The real Mosasaurus was still enormous, though: up to around 50 feet (15 meters) long.
