Let's zoom back in time, as far as we can go! Look! Everything there is, the stuff for every star, every planet, and even YOU, all squeezed together, tiny and hot. Suddenly, BANG! It grows really big, really fast. Scientists call it the Big Bang!

But it isn't really a bang! It's space stretching and growing, just like blowing up a balloon! Everything drifts apart, and it's still stretching today! As it spreads out, it cools, and the simplest stuff appears: hydrogen. It's even in the water you drink!

What does it become? Stars! Hydrogen squishes together, hotter and hotter, until it lights up. Stars are like giant ovens, cooking that hydrogen into brand-new stuff: star stuff! Before stars, there wasn't a single rock, because rocks are made of star stuff!

Then stars puff it all out into space! Let's follow that glowing speck. What will it become part of?

Are We Made of Stardust?

Yes. About 90% of your body by weight is made of ingredients that were cooked inside stars long ago, like the oxygen and carbon in every cell and the iron in your blood. Stars make these ingredients as they shine, then scatter them across space when they puff out or burst. Most of the rest is hydrogen, which is even older: it was made in the Big Bang itself.

What Happens in the Story

In Star Stuff!, your child zooms back in time to the Big Bang and follows one glowing speck of star stuff, choosing what it becomes next. Four paths lead to four different endings:

  • A speck pulled deep inside a glowing cloud, on its way to becoming a star you see every single day.

  • A whole crowd of brand-new stars, and one that's saving a spectacular surprise for last.

  • A speck that crunches into a young planet, and the space dust that's still landing today.

  • A splash into the very first ocean, and a journey that ends somewhere surprising.

More Star Stuff Facts

  • The Big Bang wasn't really an explosion: it was space itself stretching out, and it's still stretching today.

  • A shooting star is a speck of space dust, often no bigger than a grain of sand, making the air glow as it zooms through.

  • The Seven Sisters is a star cluster you can see from your backyard. Most people spot six or seven stars, but it holds hundreds more.

  • Tiny bits of space dust land on Earth every day, and scientists have even found some on city rooftops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How was the Earth formed?

About 4.5 billion years ago, from a spinning ring of dust and rock around the young Sun. The bits bumped and stuck together into bigger and bigger lumps, until one grew into a hot, glowing ball of melted rock. As it cooled, its surface hardened into the ground we stand on today.

How was the Sun formed?

About 4.6 billion years ago, inside a giant cloud of gas and dust called a nebula. Gravity pulled one clump of the cloud tighter and tighter until its middle got so hot that it began to shine. The leftover dust spinning around it went on to build the planets, including Earth.
