About Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush
The Meaning and History of the Mulberry Bush Rhyme
Whether you sing "Here we go round the mulberry bush" or "All around the mulberry bush," this action song has been a favorite for nearly 200 years! While it's a fun way to move and play, some people believe the history of the mulberry bush rhyme started in a place called Wakefield Prison. Legend says the prisoners would exercise by walking around a large mulberry tree every morning! Today, we love it as a happy song that helps children learn about their morning routines and the world around them.
Meaning and Lessons: Moving and Growing
Move Your Body!: The song shows you how to hop like rabbits, fly like birds, and run like dogs! This teaches children that being active is a fun way to stay strong and healthy. Moving around helps your brain and body feel wonderful!
Playing Together: In our version, all the different animals gather around the same bush to play. It shows that no matter how different we are—some quiet, some bouncy, some fast—everyone can join the circle and have a great time together!
Using Your Imagination: When you pretend to be a cat creeping or a bird flapping, you are using your creativity. Using your imagination makes every game feel like a magical adventure!
Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush Lyrics
Did you know? In the original 1840s version, the song was often called "All around the mulberry bush." Because mulberries actually grow on trees (not bushes!), some historians think it might have started as a "bramble bush" instead! Here are the classic mulberry bush lyrics to sing along with:
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush,
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
So early in the morning!
