Fun food facts for kids

Where Snacks Grow! is an interactive story that takes kids aged 3 to 8 on a trip to find out where their food comes from. We follow food around the world, to the farms, forests, islands and snowy fields where it grows, with every page written to be read aloud together. Here are some of our favourite fun food facts.

  • Most of the world's sugar comes from sugarcane, a giant grass that grows taller than a grown-up.

  • A vanilla flower opens for just one day, so farmers help each flower by hand.

  • The rambutan fruit is covered in soft, wiggly spikes, and its name comes from the Malay word for hair.

  • Black pepper starts out as little green berries on a vine that climbs up trees, and the sun dries them black and wrinkly.

  • In some rice fields, little ducks paddle between the plants, gobbling up weeds and bugs.

  • A coconut can float in the sea for months and still sprout into a palm tree on a new beach.

  • Every kernel on an ear of corn grows from its own silky thread.

  • It takes about forty buckets of maple sap to boil down into one bucket of maple syrup.

  • In Japan, some carrots stay under deep snow all winter without freezing, and come out extra sweet.

  • Brussels sprouts grow in a spiral, dozens of them, up one thick stalk.

  • Inside an Arctic mountain there's a giant freezer that keeps seeds from almost every country, like books in a library.

  • Milk is mostly water, so a dairy cow can drink about a bathtub of water a day.

What's inside the story

The journey starts at home with a bowl of popcorn, then heads out around the world, to the warm side or the cool side. From there it opens into four paths, each exploring one kind of place: a steamy jungle, sunny islands, the snowy north, or farms high in the mountains.

The story has 28 pages, four paths and four different endings, and every ending comes home with something to notice, make or grow. Every fact is checked, and the whole story is narrated for read-aloud time together.

Funny and random food facts

What are some funny food facts for kids?

The holes in Swiss cheese are called eyes, and a Swiss cheese with no holes at all is called blind. In Nova Scotia, Canada, people even hollow out giant pumpkins and paddle them in boat races.

What are some random food facts?

A banana plant isn't a tree. It's a giant herb, and its "trunk" is really rolled-up leaf stalks. And each pineapple plant grows just one pineapple at a time, right in its middle.

What are some fun facts about food around the world?

In the Andes mountains of Peru, farmers grow thousands of kinds of potatoes, in purple, red, yellow and even black. In Sri Lanka, cinnamon sticks start as thin strips of tree bark that curl up by themselves as they dry.
