Wee Willie Winkie (Wee Willy Winky)

Wee Willie Winkie

Wee Willie Winkie runs through the town, Upstairs and downstairs in his nightgown, Rapping at the window, crying through the lock, "Are the children in their beds? It's now eight o'clock!" Wee Willie Winkie found some children awake, "Time for bed now, for goodness sake! Let me help you get all ready for the night, I'll make sure you're warm and cozy, tucked in tight!" First he helped them brush their teeth so clean, The shiniest teeth he'd ever seen! "Now they're sparkling, now they gleam, You'll have the brightest, happiest dream!" Next he helped them wash their face, SPLISH and SPLASH all over the place! "Dry it off and towel it well, You're fresh and clean now, I can tell!" Willie found their favorite book, "Cuddle up and take a look!" He read of dragons, stars, and kings, Of faraway and magical things. Willie tucked them into bed, Pulled the blankets up and said, "Snuggle down and warm your toes, Time to let your little eyes close!" Willie sang a lullaby, "Close your sleepy little eyes, Dream of sunshine, dream of play, Till you wake another day!" Wee Willie Winkie's work is done, He's helped each sleepy little one. Now he tiptoes soft and light, "Sweet dreams, children. And goodnight!"

About Wee Willie Winkie

Origin of the Wee Willie Winkie (Wee Willy Winky) Nursery Rhyme

Whether you spell it Wee Willie Winkie or Wee Willy Winky, this classic Scottish rhyme has been helping children get ready for bed since 1841! It was written by William Miller, who wanted to create a friendly character to represent "sleepy time." Back then, Willie Winkie was described as the "Scottish Nursery Morpheus" the friendly watcher of dreams. Today, we love him as the nightgown-wearing friend who makes sure every child is tucked in safe and sound.

Meaning and Lessons: A Caring Bedtime Routine

Caring People Want to Help You!: In our story, Willie doesn't get cross with children who are still awake. Instead, he gently helps them brush their teeth and find a book. This teaches children that bedtime isn't a "rule" to be afraid of, but a cozy time when the people who love them help them feel safe and ready for sleep.

A Peaceful Community: As Willie tiptoes through the town, he reminds us that we are all part of a big community. When you are getting tucked into bed, children all over the world are doing the exact same thing! It’s a wonderful way to feel connected and safe before you close your eyes.
