Noah's Not Tired

Noah's Not Tired

Noah had a BIG day. He ran. He jumped. He splashed. By dinner time, his eyes were heavy. But Noah was NOT tired. "I'm NOT tired," said Noah. --- "Dinner time!" said Mom. Noah sat down. His head wobbled. He picked up the chocolate sauce and squeezed it all over his pasta. SQUIRT. SQUIRT. SQUUUUIRT. He looked down at his plate. Chocolate pasta. He picked up his fork and ate a big mouthful. Mom stared. "Noah... that's chocolate sauce." "I know," said Noah. He did NOT know. "Are you tired, sweetheart?" "I'm NOT tired." --- "Time to brush your teeth!" said Dad. Noah grabbed something from the cup by the sink. He shoved it in his mouth and started brushing. And brushing. And brushing. Humming to himself. Smiling in the mirror. Dad looked closer. "Buddy... that's a crayon." Noah looked at his hand. Green crayon. Not toothbrush. "I KNEW that," said Noah. He had a big green smile. "Are you sure you're not tired?" said Dad. "I'm NOT. TIRED." --- "Pajama time!" said Mom. "Go put on your banana pajamas!" Noah went to his room. Mom and Dad heard rustling. Then a zip. Then a THUMP. Mom opened the door. Noah was standing in the middle of his room wearing his sister's banana costume. Full banana. Head to toe. "Ready for bed!" said Noah. Mom looked at Dad. Dad looked at Mom. "Noah. I said banana PAJAMAS. Not a banana COSTUME." Mom knelt down. "Noah. Are you tired?" Noah's eyes were barely open. "I'm. NOT. Tired." --- "Story time!" said Noah. "But I'M reading tonight." He grabbed his favorite book. Climbed into bed. Opened it up. Upside down. "Once upon a time," said Noah, "there was a big... big... bear." His eyes drooped. "And the bear went to the... the..." His head nodded forward. "...park." "What happened at the park?" whispered Mom. "The bear went on the slide and then he... he found a really big..." His voice got quieter. "...really really big..." Quieter. "...pancake..." The book slid out of his hands. THUMP. Noah was asleep. Mouth open. Arms out. Totally gone. Mom tucked him in and kissed his forehead. "Goodnight, Noah." She tiptoed to the door. And right as she turned off the light... "...I'm not tired," mumbled Noah. Mom smiled. "I know, sweetheart." THE END.
